KARACHI: A MEGA CITY FACING SHORTAGES AND INSECURITY
In Karachi, Pakistan's economic capital and a city of over 21 million inhabitants, living conditions are deteriorating. Fed up with power cuts that can last up to 19 hours a day, residents recently protested and blocked several major roads. The megacity also suffers from severe water shortages, widespread pollution, traffic congestion, and high crime rates. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit's 2026 ranking, Karachi is among the least livable cities in the world, ranking 170th out of 173. Its infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with its particularly rapid population and urban growth.
